On the first run to Nome a team of Siberian Huskies led the way. The first run was also not a competitive race. It was a race to save lives. The people of Nome suffered from Dipthera. Because of the conditions a plane could not fly the life saving serum to Nome. However, a sled dog could run it there. The race that is now a competition follows that same trail!
Even though there are a few teams that are still pure bred huskies the majority are Alaskan Huskies. Alaskan Huskies are a mix of different dogs from the working class. One example of an Alaskan Husky could be part Wolf, part Sibe and part Greyhound. This would be an ideal mix of speed and endurance. Another piece about Sibes is there were bred to have incredible metabolisms. This is effective for long distances-the less weight to carry the better. They can run far on a limited amount of food. We see this with our dogs. If we don't take them out for a run one day then they are not interested in their food.
The picture following is Nala howling at T.E.D. Nala is our most playful dog. T.E.D. is done playing but Nala never is!
