Trip Plans

We'll be in Alaska for 5 days. Our jobs will included checking the dogs for their chips. Each dog is chipped before the race. The chip will have contact information on it as a backup if they get loose from their team and lost on the trail. If another team member or native finds the dog they can be scanned for contact information.
After that we will help assist mushers and their dogs to the starting line. We will be "handlers." Handlers are needed because the dogs are strong and go CRAZY to run. I've read that some teams need 1 handler per dog. The day before the race we will be taking a class on how to appropriately handle the dogs. We might try and get a ride with other volunteers to the second start. The first start, Saturday, March 5th is a ceremonial start in Anchorage. The real start is in Willow on Sunday.

We will be staying in a hotel this year. First year volunteers are not allowed out on the trail.

lf you follow this link you can see a picture of the hotel and the beautiful view!
